Description:
Draft of a memorandum about improvements in the University studies addressed to the Crown Prince (later King Gustavus III), then Chancellor to the University. In the hand of Linnaeus Fil., but apparently dictated by Linnaeus Pat.
The memorandum was written in the context of a reform of the Universities and academic teaching. A discussion was held in Autumn 1768, presided by the Crown Prince and subsequently printed in 1770. Linnaeus spoke sharply against the proposed changes, and the memorandum was probably written for this address.
Arvid H. Uggla (1940:105) writes: 'The statement (...) is no more than an unfinished draft, and it was probably never submitted to the Prince, to whom it is addressed. In it, Linnaeus gives his opinion of different conditions with even greater acerbity and freedom of speech. One of his contentions is that the sciences can no longer count on the same favoured position when the kingdon's foremost men, who should be appointed to leading positions by reason of their birth, are not as before highly educated men. He urged that no one, 'be he noble or peasant-born', should be admitted to the Universities before passing though the public schools. For the rest,he lashes the predilection ofr foreigners and the small attention paid to native talents. As a whole it is the expression f a decidedley radical outlook on the different social conditions.'
The memorandum consists of several rewritten drafts, most of which was published by Arvid H. Uggla (1940). The quarto sheets have not been published.
Ff 2 and 3 are a draft of fol. 1v.
Fol. 6 is a draft of fol. 5v.
Ff 13 and 14 not published.
