Description:
First draft for Linnaeus's coat-of-arms, in colour. In 1761 (ante-dated 1757), Linnaeus was ennobled, taking the name von Linné. The national herald Daniel Tilas (1712-1772) rejected this first design.
Escutcheon divided in three fields: red, black and green. In the middle an egg, silver, 'anatomised' with the yolk showing the growing point. Above the helm (silver), a Linnaea flower-stalk with two flowers. Linnaea creepers hanging down on both sides with a small insect, Linaeella, at the end of each. On the black part of the shield the impress: 'Famam ex endere factis' (in gold).
Found in one copy of Species Plantarum, II, 1753 (Arvid H. Uggla did not specify which copy).
Cf the two other drafts pasted in Syst Nat ed XII. 1766, BL20 (T. I and T. II).
