Description:
Linnaeus fil. began these lectures on 'Materia medica' (botany) in 1773, mid-way through Linnaeus pater's lectures course, as a substitute while the latter was working on the Bible Commission (as indicated in the introduction). His lectures began at 'Tetradynamia'.
ff. 1-2: Introductory remarks, indicating that Linnaeus fil. is taking over from his father as he is currently engaged by the Bible Commission (1773).
The lecture notes follow the order and genera numbers of Linné, C. von. 1749. "Materia medica Liber I de plantis". Stockholm.
One sheet or fascicle per genus, with the following sections: 'Pharm:' (with the pharmacological name), 'Qualitas/Qualitates', 'Vir/Vires', 'Usus', and 'Composita'.
From '430. Juglans' (fol. 256) to '479. Equisetum' (fol. 425), there are two sets of fascicles for each genus. An earlier set of notes has been inserted within the 1773 lecture notes: the handwriting is earlier, often with later annotations; genera names correspond to those in 1749 "Materia medica" (without the specific epithet) rather than the later notes where names follow the 1753 "Species plantarum" binomial nomenclature (see for example the entries for "437. Abies"/"Pinus larix" on ff. 283-287). It is probably a set of notes taken from Linnaeus pater's lectures, which Linnaeus fil. used and copied when he acted as his substitute. For some genera, only this earlier set of notes exists, and there are no corresponding 1773 notes.
On fol. 327v: 'Caroli linnaei | collegien | i Botaniquen' in very early handwriting.
