Description:
Draft of a letter from Carl Linnaeus fil. to Lars Broberg, gardener at the Uppsala University Botanical Garden, possibly in response ot a letter from Lars Broberg to Carl Linnaeus fil., 27 November 1781, "The Linnaean correspondence", linnaeus.c18.net, letter L6149.
Linnaeus fil. is glad to know that some of the plants and seeds he has sent home have flowered. The garden at Uppsala is the main reason why he travelled abroad, to work on its behalf. He is saddened that his efforts have not always been appreciated and has been unfailry criticized - for example for leaving only useless seeds in it. He has in general been criticized at home while in fact he is doing his best. He feels this deeply. He is furious that Professor Thunberg has claimed to have persuaded Broberg with difficulty to take charge of the garden when Linnaeus had agreed and had long before shaken hands on it.
Linnaeus is short of cash as he has no public funds, an dit has cost him a great deal to buy and send seeds home. He needs to keep enough cash to get home himself.
He plans to leave England in June for a two to three-week journey to Paris, thence he will go to Holland and then to Germany and Denmark.
Orangeries, etc are quite different to the Swedes', Linnaeus fil. has studied them lest their methods are quite different to the Swedes' - because of lack of funds in Sweden. He is greatly impressed by the way things are done.
He asks Broberg to leave the garden behind the orangerie as it is until his return.
He hopes to be home in the autumn.
He wants to send tea plants home.
